The September Surge… are you taking advantage of it?

The “September Surge” is a familiar term with recruiters for a combination of reasons. People are returning from their vacations, having squeezed in those last few moments of summer. Companies are also starting to loosen their purse strings this time of year after carefully watching their budgets up to this point.

September 2023 and into Q4 of 2023 is going to be especially exciting, as we have all been watching the market under a microscope. After fears and whispers of a possible recession have finally died down, the economy has taken a turn for the better, and the market is getting hot!

So how can you fully take advantage of this shift and the amazing upcoming job market?

1. Dust off your LinkedIn profile.

Is your LinkedIn profile updated with your current role and responsibilities? Instead of just listing your title, take things a step further by listing responsibilities. You can also improve your chance of coming up in an employer’s search by getting specific with the “Skills” section of your profile. While soft skills are important, employers are typically using a Boolean or keyword search to locate potential new hires. Adding technical skills, responsibilities, and achievements will bring you to the top of their search and make you out to be the rockstar you know you are!

2. Network, network, network!

You know the old saying, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know!”? I cannot emphasize enough how important this is. Time to bust out that rolodex or scroll through that cell phone. If you see a role that you are interested in, one of the first steps should always be checking to see if you have any connections within the company. This can move your resume from the bottom of the pile to the top.

In addition to previously established connections, try making some new ones! Attend local networking and business events. Check out eventbrite.com and you can narrow your search by category, location, cost, etc. Some are even free!

3. Find a recruiter you trust.

Find a reputable recruiting agency to represent you and help manage your search. If you are in a specific industry, do some research on agencies that specialize in that field. Check out reviews and recommendations on the recruiters’ LinkedIn pages to make sure you are working with someone who knows the market and is a great liaison between you and the company of your dreams. Agencies will often also have multiple roles they are actively working on listed on their websites and LinkedIn pages.

Companies put a lot of trust in their recruiters, and a good recruiter will always have the best interest of not only their clients, but their candidates in mind.
