“Ugh I got another message from a recruiter.” — Why you should reconsider taking our call

Alarm goes off. Sun is shining through the curtains. You get up, get yourself ready, take your dog out (or not, if you don’t have any pets) get the kids ready for school (or again, not), then you sit down to start your day. Open your inbox and BAM (no, I’m not Emeril), 89 messages just overnight. So you sit there and go through each email, happily deleting some of the messages as they are just spam.

Then you get to this message:

From: Kevin Haines, Subject: (insert job title here) – Hi (insert name here), I came across your profile…”

*rolls eyes*

DELETE.

I know, you get messages from recruiters all.the.time. And you’re tired of them. I admit it myself, I would delete and delete, especially if I weren’t looking for a new role at the time. However, in writing this blog, I’m asking that you pause for 3 seconds in your busy day and just read the message. Maybe you’re not looking for a new career, or maybe you’re thinking “why would he email me about a strategist role when my LinkedIn screams marketing admin?!” Either way, you’re receiving the email for a reason. As recruiters, we look at the whole picture and don’t focus on one particular role from your past or present. We have an eye for transferrable skills and if you receive an email from us, it’s for a reason!

A lot of the time, when I end up talking to candidates on LinkedIn, it’s because I made the first move and messaged them. Maybe they aren’t looking for a job at the moment, but I end up talking to a lot of people who, at times, end up applying for and getting the job I originally messaged them about. Whether you are truly job hunting, perusing what’s out there, or haven’t even had the thought of leaving your current role cross your mind, if you find it’s an interesting opportunity, please respond! I’ll take up about 20 minutes of your time talking about something that could end up being your new career. OR, you might know someone who would be a perfect fit.

In a world where mass emails are a daily occurrence in our lives, maybe the last thing you want to do in your busy day is respond to another email. However, I challenge you to open that email and consider what the recruiter has to say. Maybe you’ll see that it actually is an incredible opportunity, and you’re so thankful we reached out. (Or, hopefully this isn’t the case, maybe you’ll roll your eyes and block me.) Either way, please remember: the main thing I am trying to do is help. What may seem like spam is really a message saying “hey, I have this cool opportunity that I think you might be a fit for based on your career experience.” Recruiters, especially us at Juno, truly want to help you find that new role or help you see the potential you have for different experiences. While it’s easy to stay in one industry, especially if you’ve been in it for years now, we can help you see new possibilities with transferrable skills and the knowledge we have about certain industries.

The bottom line is that we as recruiters send TONs of messages to candidates every day with the hope of reaching someone and helping them shift into what could be a new career for them, and maybe it just fell in their lap. Who knows. What I do know is that while time is precious, even if you do waste 30 seconds of your life reading my message or talking to me on the phone (to not have it work out in the end), you’re at least giving yourself the chance to possibly discover something about yourself/experiences that maybe you didn’t notice before. Recruiters want to help you, I promise!

So, next email you get from a recruiter, what will you do? Hopefully, after reading this short blog, you’ll give it 2 more seconds of a thought, and click to read. Who knows, maybe you’ll find your next job!
