The Do's & Don'ts of Working with a Recruiter
First time working with a recruiter? Here are some tips and tricks to help you get the most out of your experience!
DO: BE PUNCTUAL AND RESPONSIVE. SET THE TONE!
Your interaction with a recruiter reflects on how you will, in turn, interact with a potential employer. Be punctual, responsive, and professional. No, this is not an interview. Yes, you can stumble on your words and we can absolutely chat about what you are watching on Netflix, but remember that you are talking to the person that will be representing you to your future employer.
If you are not responsive to emails and missing phone calls, this shows that it is quite possible the pattern will continue with an employer. Life happens, we get it. If you have to miss a call just let us know and we can reschedule! Just do your due diligence and set the tone for the relationship.
DO: BE PREPARED!
Plan ahead. Prior to hopping on the phone with a recruiter, it is always best to update your resume. We can always help you tweak and provide guidance on how to enhance it, but providing us with a foundation of your professional experience is very helpful to start the process.
If you are actively on the market, reflect on what you are seeking in a new role. Think about some of the following items:
Location
Industry
Primary responsibilities
What do you love about your current role?
What do you dislike about your current role?
Compensation
The more you give thought to what you are seeking, the better we are able to assist you. Pro tip: Connect with your recruiter on LinkedIn and email over a thank you note!
DO: SPILL THE TEA. GIVE DETAIL!
Here at Juno, we have specialized teams that focus on particular verticals in Tech & Marketing, Admin & Legal, and HR & Ops. This allows us to be experts in these specific areas, enabling us to better help you!
While we are indeed experts in these spaces, we still want to know ALL THE THINGS. It can be overwhelming sharing all the details of what you are doing day in and day out - your duties are endless! However, the more we know, the better we can help. This is where being prepared also comes into play. Take out that resume, jot down some notes, and highlight what is most important for us to know.
DON’T: OVERINFLATE YOUR SKILLSET.
Keep it real. You don’t have to be a jack of all trades or a world-renowned expert to land a new position. It is important we have the most accurate depiction of your skillset so we can speak with you about roles that are best suited to where you are in your career. There is a shoe for every foot!
DON’T: USE COMPENSATION AS YOUR ONLY REASON FOR BEING ON THE MARKET. DIG DEEPER!
Be thoughtful while communicating your reason for being on the market. If money is your only motivator for making a move, we encourage you to dig deeper. Oftentimes there are aspects of a role that are leading you to feel unfulfilled that go far beyond compensation.
Is it a culture issue?
No room for growth?
Not feeling challenged?
Ready for a career shift?
Overall, be yourself, stay professional, and remember that we are here to help connect with you with an opportunity that allows you to shine!
