How to Catch a Recruiter’s Attention: Tips for a Job Seeker
Oftentimes when people think about how to grab a recruiter’s attention, the first thought is always by sending them a solid resume or LinkedIn profile. While these are obviously necessary tools to land a job, they don’t always work best on their own.
We are already immersed in a digital world, and on top of that, let’s add a pandemic. It’s safe to say that human interaction hasn’t been at its all-time high, and it can affect various areas of our lives, including finding the right job.
So yes, while having a solid resume and LinkedIn presence can help you land a great gig, let’s try pairing that with something else…connection.
As recruiters, we look through many resumes and LinkedIn profiles a day. But, unfortunately, since we are human, we don’t remember absolutely every person we have ever come across and what they do for a living. There are certainly ways to stand out.
HERE ARE A FEW WAYS TO HELP CATCH THE ATTENTION OF A RECRUITER IN YOUR JOB SEARCH!
Build the connection. Send a LinkedIn request to a recruiter and let them know you are looking for a new opportunity. This is a great time to send over your super awesome resume and network. Even if they do not have a job that is a good fit for you now, building the connection could pay off later!
Avoid using templates – be personal! Suppose your initial outreach to a recruiter is with a template that someone else created for you. In that case, you are doing yourself a disservice. LinkedIn templates don’t offer a chance to say why you are a good fit for a role, and they won’t showcase who you are. Instead, human outreach will garner a personal response.
Showcase your value on your profile. Detailed LinkedIn pages are the way to a recruiter’s heart. If you message a recruiter that you are looking for a job, they will naturally look at your profile. Having a thought-out profile that highlights your skills and experience will stand out to them more than just having job titles on a page.
At the end of the day, your resume and LinkedIn profiles don’t always fully showcase who you are and why you can be a solid fit for a job. Sometimes the revelations (for you & recruiters) come from open conversations, which start and grow with a sincere human connection.
