Yes, Contract Work Can Be Beneficial to Both Employee & Employer – Here’s How

As someone that has worked in the contract employment world, both on the sales and the staffing sides, I’ve seen the positive impact it can make for both employee and employer (more times than I can count). Let’s dive deeper into the seemingly enigma that is contract work to see if it’s the right fit for you.

Let’s start with the basics: what exactly is a contract employee?

A contract employee is an individual, oftentimes with a specific skill set, who a company hires for a dedicated length of time and a predetermined compensation. These workers are sometimes referred to as temp employees or freelancers.

When/why would a company hire a contract employee?

For employers whose workload ebbs and flows, contract employees are often very beneficial. Companies who need help to get through a certain period of time (think: open enrollment, program growth, or a startup environment) can hire contract workers to create an efficient flow of progress and growth. Contract employees can bring a specialized skill set to the table that may not exist internally.

How is contract work beneficial to the employee?

As a contractor, you’re able to gain skills and knowledge of different systems, ways of documentation and employee engagement. You learn skills that you might not have acquired otherwise and you can do it on a temporary basis while finding the best fit for you in all aspects. Finding the correct fit for yourself both culturally, skills and growth wise can be an important and empowering tool as you navigate your career path.

How can leadership & workplace culture benefit from temp employees?

As a leader in a company, taking on a contract placement makes sure the fit is also effective and financially suitable for your needs and the company's needs without making the full-time investment. This brings about the very important option of the Temp to Perm candidate. This candidate can be a wonderful temporary solution to a need while still training them to learn the systems and processes within your company. There is very little risk involved in this step but the rewards can be plentiful.
