A Day in the Life of a Talent Manager

Just another day in paradise…I mean Juno!

Each morning I get to wake up knowing that I’ll get to do what I love.  I get to work with an out of this world team, I get to connect with incredible talent, and I get to make an impact.  It may not be the palm tree and ocean kind of paradise, but if you told me that this kind of career was an option just two years ago, I certainly wouldn’t have believed you!

I won’t lie to you. Mornings are rough. Why? Two small humans. That’s why. You know what makes it better? Having the autonomy to choose whether I want to work from home or go into the office in Philly each day.

I wake up each morning, I get those kids out the door (bye, love you!), and after puttering around getting things done around the house/chugging coffee I log online. In my pajamas. Yep, I’m usually in my pajamas.

I start my day by going through emails. What is a priority? What can wait? I make my priority list for the day and it’s game on. That first cup of coffee hits and we are off to the races.

My team often starts the day with a team huddle which is usually a pretty balanced mix of catching up on Netflix shows, what happened over the weekend, and new requisitions and priorities we need to discuss. I don’t think I’ve ever left a huddle without laughing at least once.

After our huddle we all get to work on our priorities for the day. These look different from day to day depending on our volume (which is usually very high!) and the needs of our clients. Here is a breakdown of how my day is usually spent:

  • Team meetings

  • Connecting with Human Resources & Talent Acquisition folks

  • Chatting with candidates about specific roles we are working on, answering questions about the market, giving requested advice to folks looking to make a career change, discussing backgrounds, learning about the professional goals and long term desires of candidates, etc.

  • Connecting with clients to best understand their needs so I am able to present them with candidates that exceed their expectations and are the perfect glass slipper fit for them

  • Lunch! Sometimes this is time is spent working, sometimes it is spent going for a long walk to soak up some sun, sometimes it is spent running an errand or putting a dent in the never ending laundry pile!

  • Partaking in ERG meetings with colleagues

  • Training for internal systems, processes, and/or tips & tricks of how to be as effective and efficient as possible

  • Market research to truly provide expert knowledge and value to my candidates and clients

  • The occasional happy hour or team event

I love to end my day at the gym because I think a productive + endorphin filled mom is the best thing I can give my kids when I scoop them up from childcare! The next couple of hours is protected time that I have intentionally set aside just for my family.  I rarely check my phone or emails from the time my kids get home to the time they close their eyes at night. I love having those 3ish hours to give them all of me (something I wasn’t able to do in the past). After their bedtime I check for any emails that need to be addressed in a timely manner. After that is taken care of, it’s time for Netflix, a bedtime snack, some time with my husband, and sleep!

Rereading what I just wrote has me with tears in my eyes if I’m being honest. I am just so thankful.

Just another day in paradise…I mean Juno!

Cheers!
