5 Things to Consider This Holiday Season in the Workplace

December, the end of the year, holiday season…whatever you call it, I think we can all agree it’s one of the busiest times of the year. Recognizing and approaching diverse workplace practices can feel overwhelming, so we’ve collected a few ideas to make this December, and upcoming year, more inclusive.

1. Inclusive language can feel touchy this time of year.

Maybe you’re not sure what your colleagues celebrate, or you know it’s different from your traditions, and aren’t sure how to navigate. Wish your colleagues “Happy Holidays” or even better, if you know what they are celebrating, be specific! Take time to learn about your colleagues’ traditions.

2. Holiday parties can be a great way to bring your company together.

Steer clear of focusing on any one holiday. Instead, keep a neutral theme (i.e. winter) and celebrate all of your accomplishments from the past year! When it comes to more day-to-day celebrating, if you work in an office setting and plan to decorate your space, try to use neutral, non-religious decorations to foster an inclusive environment.

3. How can company policies best serve us during the holidays?

Make sure to be as flexible and accommodating as possible when it comes to employees requesting PTO on non-federal holidays. And when people are off or the company is closed? Encourage your employees to take that time to relax and celebrate! If you send an email or request during this time off, don’t expect a response until the scheduled return-to-work date. Additionally, keep in mind that the holidays can be a tough time for many people. Remind your employees of the resources and assistance available to them.

4. Remember that this is a time to think of others and give back.

While the holiday season is full of happiness and spreading cheer, we need to remember that it’s different for everyone. We don’t know what people are going through, and the holidays can be a very lonely time for some. Giving back is a wonderful way to think of others during this time: soup kitchens, toy drives, food drives, clothing donations, money donations - these are all selfless ways to give back to the community during this very giving time of year.

5. Still confused? Easy - find out!

If you’re unsure about a holiday or how to ask someone about their own holiday traditions, start the conversation yourself. Ask questions, do research, attend events - fully immerse yourself in something to be able to understand it a little better.
