Reputation Matters: Top tips every company can take when building an employer brand

Reputation doesn’t just precede Taylor Swift; your company’s public reputation is the first thing potential candidates see when they are considering applying for one of your open roles. In fact, 76% of candidates research the hiring company before applying (iHire) and even more eye-opening, 50% of employees say they wouldn’t work for a company with a bad reputation for even more pay (Gitnux).

Here’s what a strong employer brand can do for your organization:

Attract Top Talent

A well-defined employer brand helps attract high-quality candidates who are aligned with your company’s values, culture, and mission. When your organization is known for being a great place to work, you’ll find it easier to draw in talented individuals who are excited about the opportunity to work for your company. Even better, companies with a strong employer brand experience a 43% decrease in the cost per hire (Gitnux). Call it what you want, but I’d say that’s a win.

Increase Employee Retention

A strong employer brand not only helps attract talent but also helps retain it. Your employees want to work for an organization with a mission and reputation they can be proud of. When employees feel a strong connection to the company, they’re less likely to look for the getaway car and are more likely to stay. A strong employer brand reduces employee turnover by 28%, reducing the associated costs of hiring and training new employees (Gitnux). But honestly, who’s counting?

Enhance Employee Engagement

You should take it as a compliment that when employees have a positive perception of their employer and feel a sense of belonging, they are more engaged, motivated, and productive. This can lead to better overall performance and business outcomes. According to Forbes, companies with highly engaged employees are 21% more profitable.

Competitive Advantage

Clients and candidates have an abundance of organizations at their fingertips- what is it about your company that draws them in? A positive employer brand can enhance the public perception of your organization, which can benefit your customer relationships and overall business success. It creates a positive cycle where a good reputation attracts talent, leading to better performance, which in turn enhances the reputation further.

Make sure your company isn’t in a candidate’s list of names, in red, underlined due to a lack of employer brand. Instead build a reputation where candidates and clients alike want to be your first string.
