Optimizing Your LinkedIn Profile for Jobseekers

Today, LinkedIn is the most important platform for both Hiring Managers and Job Seekers. The contents of your LinkedIn profile are extremely important, ESPECIALLY, if you are actively or passively on the job market.

I work here at Juno Search Partners, as a VP for our Accounting/Finance and Supply Chain Groups. We are work on searches for clients at all levels from Executive to Entry Level positions and I certainly spend my fair share of time scrolling LinkedIn for the perfect fit for our client’s needs. I scroll past a lot of LinkedIn profiles and for this blog I want to provide you with a baseline guide that will help to optimize your LinkedIn profile, whether you are a seasoned executive or a young professional.

Your Profile Picture

  • Professional headshots are great, but they are expensive, and by no means required. Pick a profile picture that is clear and shows your personality (but maybe leave your dog out of the pic)

Post Clear Job Titles

  • Provide accurate Job Titles. Did you get promoted last March? Make sure your job title is up to date and accurate!

  • Under each company provide a short and concise description! What does the company do? What products or services do they provide? How big are they (employee count/revenue are great!)? As people view your profile, providing this basic information will allow for recruiters to assess your fit without having to click off your profile.

  • For each Job include some information about your responsibilities. Avoid copy/pasting the bullet points from your resume. What were you hired to do? Include reporting relationships, both up and down. Include a couple specific accomplishments but keep them simple. A high schooler should be able to understand them!

Keywords

  • Keywords are important because they are often what recruiters use to limit their candidate pool while conducting a search. Every industry/profession is different, but specific keywords can be crucial in getting your profile noticed! Do you have experience working in specific industries? Experience with different coding languages? Are you an expert in certain manufacturing methodologies? Have you implemented an accounting software?

  • Avoid the urge to flood your profile with extensive keywords, though. Too many can make your profile feel cluttered and confusing

  • If you have questions about what kinds of keywords should be on your profile, reach out to a Juno recruiter and we can walk you through what makes the most sense for you!

Review your Profile

  • Ask yourself, based on my profile, can a recruiter see if I am a fit for the role? When a company hires a recruiter, they want to find someone who fits. Recruiters are scrolling hundreds of profiles and often working on tight deadlines. Could they miss yours?

By following these guidelines and tailoring your LinkedIn profile to highlight your unique skills and experiences, you'll significantly increase your chances of attracting the attention of potential employers. Remember, your LinkedIn profile is your digital handshake. Make it count!
