D'You Know Juno - Jeff D'Aquila

Name: Jeff D’Aquila

Nickname: Spicolli, for Jeff Spicolli of Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Long ago, my coworkers at my part-time job (during high school) gave me this nickname because I was (in their view) comically unlike Jeff Spicolli.

Position @ Juno: Managing Director, aka servant of the business and team.

Favorite thing about Philadelphia? For food, art, architecture, music, walkability, proximity to beaches and the country and quality housing, Philadelphia is a real sleeper. If only more people knew! Wait, then everyone would know. This is one of my favorite and least favorite things about Philadelphia. (Strengths often come with other liabilities.)

Do you have any secret skills?

  • ABO Certified Optician (lapsed)

  • Braciole

  • Wordsmithing

  • Hair cutting (1 style only)

If you were a TV or movie character, who would you be? This is the sort of thing that others see in you more easily than self.

You get to pick one person, dead or alive, to have lunch with – who would it be? These days? RBG.

You are on death row – what is your last meal? Big gin martini, carpetbagger steak, Yorkshire pudding, David Ansel’s green salad, ricotta cheese pie.

Favorite song of all time? This is an unfair question….

  • Velvet Underground – Rock and Roll (the demo track is the best version)

  • Wilco – Walt Whitman’s Niece, Hate it Here

  • Carta ao Tom ’74 - Vinicius de Morais and Toquinho

  • Right by Your Side – Eurythmics

  • O Occhi, Manza Mia – Orlando di Lasso (composer)

  • My Old School – Steely Dan

  • Amen – Meek Mill is good, too.

Favorite movie of all time?

  • Two for the Road (1967, Stanley Donen, Director)

  • Moonstruck (1987, Norman Jewison, Director)

  • (Also a fan or Wes Anderson’s aesthetic)

If you could live anywhere else, where would it be?

  • San Francisco, prior to 2000

  • US: Boston, Miami, Portland, Camden or Belfast (Maine)

  • Europe: London, Vienna, Rome

Where is the best cheesesteak in Philadelphia? Jim’s on South or Mama’s on Belmont in Bala Cynwyd.

Favorite family tradition?

  • Childhood: Christmas eve lunch in town with family, then open-house party, then midnight mass, then opening presents and staying up half the night talking.

  • Adulthood: Thanksgiving weekend in the mountains outside Charlottesville.

  • Culinary: Ricotta pie (Easter).

What is the best piece of advice you ever received?

  • Don’t worry too much about what people think about you. They don’t think about you that much.” -Ron Gallagher

  • “Let the ball bounce a second time before reacting.” - Joe D’Aquila

  • “Time cools, time clarifies; no mood can remain unaltered through the course of hours.” -Thomas Mann

Biggest pet peeve? Arrogance.

What is your strangest recruiting/resume moment? A jobseeker once described supporting himself through college as “studying all the time and surviving by eating instant ramen noodles out of a frisbee over the kitchen sink.”
