NET/WORK Philly: Philadelphia’s Hottest Tech Jobs Fair

A few weeks ago our IT Division took part in Technically Philly’s Second Annual NET/WORK Event at Union Transfer. Jesse NetworkingNET/WORK is an IT jobs fair where hiring companies from all over the Philadelphia region come to actually meet and speak with IT professionals looking for their first (or next) career move. Juno, along with 40+ additional companies, came out to talk about open IT positions within their organization as well as their company culture and what it’s like to work for said company. Being that Juno’s IT Division is still in its early stages, this was a great opportunity to not only meet potential candidates, but also chat with some local tech companies who might need our assistance in the future.

The event was held at Union Transfer on Spring Garden, which I think was the perfect place for an event like this. I admittedly haven not been in this space since it was the Spaghetti Warehouse so I wasn’t too sure what to expect! When we first walked in we were showed to our display table where we quickly set up and got ready to meet local techies. Being that this was for Philadelphia companies specifically, we even brought some Philly soft pretzels for people to much on! Over 40 companies were on display in rows around the main performance area, making it easy for job seekers to walk through and meet with each company. In addition, there were professional development workshops, resume reviews and even free headshots! There were even group chats led by seasoned developers and engineers where the latest tech trends were being discussed and debated.Networking 03.03.15

Not having attended this event last year, I wasn’t sure how many people would actually come out. There ended up being over 500 attendees! Some were getting ready to graduate and just starting to learn about the types of opportunities out there, some were more seasoned IT professionals looking to see what better opportunities there might be, and some were just there to network.

Attending as a hiring organization was a huge success. Not only were we able to meet with other companies in the area, but we were able to get real face to face time in a more casual setting with candidates. It gave us the opportunity to really talk about what it is that we do and learn more about what they did as well. Being that this event is very casual, it made it feel like less of an interview and more of a conversation. We ended up meeting people with all different backgrounds and were able to give them job search advice and tips. From the job seeker side, I cannot think of any other job fair like this for IT professionals in Philly. The hiring organizations there ranged from recruiting companies to large corporations and even small startups, all working in various industries. The huge advantage here is rather then just sending your resume over and crossing your fingers that they call, you get to actually meet with hiring managers and really let them get to know you, not just your resume.

If you are an IT professional in Philly I would highly suggest attending next year. Even if you aren’t looking for a new job, there is much to gain from attending this event. I hope to be a part of this next year!
